4. TruePower Static Grass Applicator for Railway Terrain Modeling Diorama
This is a recommended tool for applying static grass (see #2 and #3). The TruePower static Grass Applicator induces a static charge between the grass and the. working surface. This makes it so that when applied, the grass will stand up vertically from the terrain surface (as it would in real life). This makes this tool indispensable for creating realistic scenery.
5. Hot Wire Foam Cutter and Styrofoam Sculpting Tool (2 Pen)
Are you making your own unique terrain piece? Every DIY terrain maker should consider getting a hot wire foam cutter. Here are few popular hot wire foam cutters. These tools use high heat combined with a thin metal rod or wire to cut EPS styrofoam and household insulation foam into custom shapes. 7. Digital Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner
This ultrasonic cleaner is larger and more powerful than the one shown in #6. But, here I’m showing you an additional option for this valuable tool for the hobbyist. See this review for recommended ultrasonic cleaners.
8. Honda Electronics Ultrasonic Cutter
Cut through anything! This is the most technologically bewildering tool that actually works. Are you looking for a unique gift? This is probably one of the most novel gifts you can buy for the hobbyist or artist. The Honda Electronics ultrasonic cutter uses high frequency vibration to allow a sharp hobby blade to slice through any material. At more than 40,000 vibrations per. second, this is a knife that will cut through paper, plastic, wood, and even thin metals like a hot knife through butter. On the pricier side, this tool is for the serious arts and crafter who wants to get work done in the most efficient way possible. It’s a shockingly awesome gift for yourself or someone you really want to surprise with a cool gadget.

This is an essential tool to have around the home.
10. Hand Drill Bits Set 26pc – Precision Pin Vise
If you’re a scale modeler, a miniature hobbyist or tabletop war-gamer working with model kits, then, the pin vice is a key tool in your toolbox. You don’t get this because you like how it looks, or think its cool to have; rather, this is a necessity for all sorts of things like making sure your models don’t fall apart from weak bonds of glue (though we have some more suggestions for this problem here). Making small holes allows you to insert pins into model parts that create a secondary scaffold to join multiple pieces together in a permanent way. This is the tool to do that.
11. Iwata-Medea Airbrush Cleaner (16 Oz.)
Any hobbyist who stays long enough will eventually consider using an airbrush. If you or your potential recipient of your generosity has an airbrush, then this is the Airbrush Cleaner by which many cleaners are measured. Of course, you can use Windex, or other cleaning solutions in your airbrush; but this one is fast-acting, odorless, and environmentally safe. I personally use this cleaner in my ultrasonic cleaner once in a while.
12. Gorilla Super Glue Gel, 20 Gram, Clear
What is the best glue for miniatures and models? Do you play Warhammer 40k or other tabletop wargames? If so, then assembly is part of. your hobby workflow. This is one of the best glues for assembling plastic, metal, or resin miniatures. I have other suggestions here. Of all the airbrush compressor to get this, is the best you’ll find for the price. It comes with an air tank, pressure regulator, water trap, and automatic shut-off (when you don’t need the pressure reserved in the tank). This is an affordable compressor that I would highly recommend for anyone interested in airbrushing miniatures or models.
20. Badger Air-Brush Co. TC910 Aspire Pro Compressor
This is the airbrush compressor I have. As a commissioned painter who has provided years of miniature painting services, this compressor has been a pillar in my work. It is, in my opinion, the best airbrush compressor to get if you don’t want to cut any corners. Mine has been in operation for years and years without any maintenance (zero maintenance!).
The following sentence is ridiculous, but here’s my cheesy two-second pitch:
I don’t know about you, but car makers need to learn something from this type of engineering. Hah! It comes with an air tank, pressure regulator, water trap, and automatic shut-off. On top of this, the compressor has enough horse power to operate more than a a few airbrushes at the same time. The Aspire Pro is also portable, built into a strong metallic frame with a sturdy carry handle. Details here.

21. Master Airbrush Portable Hobby Airbrush Craft Spray Booth
Spraying acrylic via airbrush is a potential mess. A spray booth takes that risk and says “nope”. This is a portable version that will fit in most hobby spaces with no problem. You can either use the built in filter or vent the over spray through the provided hose to the outside. A suction fan will provide the negative pressure to direct the airflow away from you and the rest of your ambient air space. Take a look.
22. Master Airbrush Smooth Rotating 7.5 in. Diameter Turntable
Spraying a 3D object is a lot easier if you turn the object rather than yourself. This is your turntable, like a record player or lazy Susan. Practical and simple, this turn table keeps your hands from the spray as well provides access for your airbrush work to the working surface.
23. Tamiya Surface Primer Gray
There are a lot of options for priming miniatures and scale models. I’ve reviewed several of the best primer options here. And, Tamiya is near the top of the list. It’s the first step for any scale modeling or miniature painting project (after assembly, of course!).

25. Vallejo Grey Primer Acrylic Polyurethane, 200ml

28. Liquitex Professional Matte Varnish, 16 oz
This is a go-to standard matte varnish for most artists. It can either be applied with a regular brush or applied via spray to evenly coat a piece’s surface. While the majority of the brushes are synthetic (which are still excellent and highly useful), there’s also a kolinsky sable included in this set. For painting miniatures, there can be no greater valued brush set than this one if you’re looking for versatility for every potential project. Check out the brush review of the Wargamer Regiment brush (included in this set).

37. Games Workshop Citadel Painting Handle XL
Painting miniatures can be a pain, literally. Holding onto small models with your fingers in a claw-like grip can lead to serious issues in the long term. Ergonomics to the rescue. I love the Citadel Handles (the entire line). See my review of this painting handle. I own several of these myself already, receiving 1 or 2 as gifts, too. These make great stuffers along with other gifts. This is the Extra-Large handle that allows you to hold larger based models comfortably. Always useful and welcomed by miniature tabletop painters and hobbyists.
38. Games Workshop Citadel Assembly Handle
The Citadel Assembly Handle is the most versatile of the line. It can hold small parts for you while you assemble them. The clips are attached to flexible armatures that moves in all directions. This has been also useful for me when airbrushing or painting small pieces. See what I think here, or for other painting handle options.
39. Games Workshop Citadel Painting Handle
When these came onto the market, I was skeptical. But, since getting one, I ended up buying multiple Citadel Painting Handles. They operate very well with a single hand; while you paint with the other. For long painting sessions, they are comfortable. When you want to airbrush or do other spraying jobs and need a better grip on a miniature, this is the most convenient tool around. Much better than gluing your miniature bases to empty spray caps, cork, or other DIY options. Sure, it’s a little money, but the value this has added to my workflow has been significant.

For modeling tanks, vehicles, and other mechanical miniatures, this will be an incredible asset to any hobbyist. Here’s a basic tutorial for how to paint a scale model tank.

51. Robart Manufacturing Paint Shaker
It goes without saying that model paints are formulated for achieving great results for miniature artists. The drawback, of course, is that the high pigment density also means that paints designed for model painting tend to separate in their bottles. Separated paints are often viscous, so they require some vigorous shaking to return them to their useful state. In comes the hobby paint shaker shown below. I love mine and use it all the time. Everyone forgets how important books are nowadays. Don’t be that person. Give the gift of a good how-to hobby guide book. I’ve reviewed a few of my favorite how-to-paint miniature books. A few of the ones listed below are my recommendation for gifts to anyone in the tabletop miniature painting hobby.
73. Vallejo Painting Miniatures from A to Z Vol 2
This is one of my favorite books by far in the miniature hobby. The book is written by Angel Giraldez, lead studio artist for Corvus Belli (creators of “Infinity the Game”). You can see some of the approaches I learned from this book in my Gallery.
74. Battlefields in Miniature: Making Realistic and Effective Terrain for Wargames
In this book, Paul Davies, takes you through the steps for making the basic battlefield landscape on your tabletop. He goes through the techniques of making a beautiful miniature landscape for your war games. There are specific chapters for different historical periods and geographic locations, e.g., urban, farmland, deserts. There are also detailed instructions on how to add vegetation, building, roadways, trench systems (WW1 anyone?), etc. This book contains beautiful photographs (eye-level and above) of the work-in-progress as well as finished terrain set pieces!
75. How to Paint Board Game Miniatures: The Beginners Guide to Painting Board Game Miniatures
The book is FREE with Kindle Unlimited (30 day free trial). It’s a fairly short book, but it’s great for beginners! It has easy to follow instructions, pictures with what-to-do instructions, and a list of needed starting materials. This checks off most of the things I look for in an instructional book for painting miniatures. Again, it’s pretty hard to beat free.
76. Painting Wargaming Figures
In this book, Javier Gomez, a professional miniature painter shares his secrets in this ‘how-to’ guide to painting miniatures. This is a great reference for a reader to learn the whole process, from material and supply choices, and even photographing the finished model. Learn how to use techniques such as dry-brushing, ink-washing, shading and highlighting through step-by-step instruction. A must-have for anyone in the hobby.
Fountain Pens, Journals, and Ink
I love fountain pens. They provide you with a unique writing experience, and are simply fun to use. The modern fountain pen is practical, even utilitarian. There’s a pen for every personality. Did you know fountain pens are a way to help the planet? Take a look at the fountain pens, journals, and inks below. They make great memorable gifts!
77. Lamy Safari Fountain Pen
If someone asked me what fountain pen to start with, the Lamy Safari fountain pen would be my #1 recommendation. Form follows function in this pen design. Durable, reliable, and elegant, the Lamy Safari is an amazing writing instrument. Smooth writing nibs (many different sizes) and compatible with the endless range of inks for fountain pens. These are lovely gifts, and I own 5 of them myself! Take a look!
78. Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen, 1.0mm nib
A solid writer, the Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen is the perfect gift for students, professionals, and creative writers who love the analog approach. The pen has a weighty brass metal barrel, well-balanced design, and comes with an elegant Pilot gift box. The Pilot Metropolitan is one of the most highly-rated fountain pens on Amazon. See here!
79. PILOT Vanishing Point Retractable Fountain Pen, Matte Black Barrel
This is my personal everyday carry fountain pen. This fountain pen has a “capless” design. To extend the nib, you merely click the button like a ballpoint pen would. When finished writing, the 14k gold nib retracts again into the barrel with a nifty trapdoor in the tip to protect the tip. The pilot vanishing points comes in many colors and designs.
80. Ancora Titanic Luxury 18K Gold Nib Fountain Pen – Elegant Expensive Gift – Fine Writing Instrument
Jewelry that functions as a pen. This is the Ancora Titanic Luxury 18k Gold Nib fountain pen. I’m not sure if I would suggest carrying this around. In fact, I’m not sure how this got on my list of potential gifts. This pen is exorbitant. Take a look for yourself.
81. Diamine – Shimmering Fountain Pen Ink, Night Sky 50ml
Ah, inks. Lovely inks. Pretty colors for days on end. I love shopping for fountain pen ink. So much possibility in a little package. Diamine is a very well known fountain pen ink company. They make a huge variety of colors. This particular shimming fountain pen ink is special, however, as it is designed to “shimmer” with sparkly gold flecks. Creative writer? Rejoice when you see your words on a page literally come to life under the right light.
82. J. Herbin 1670 Anniversary Inks – Gold Sheen 50 ml Bottled – Emerald of Chivor
This is a top-shelf fountain pen ink. Make sure you swirl your pen before you start writing so the gold particle mix well. This is a beautiful emerald colored blue-green fountain pen. Highly-rated and beautiful.
83. Leather Writing Journal Notebook, MALEDEN Classic Bound Refillable Notebook
If you’re giving the gift of a pen and ink, why not add a notebook? Words and words wrapped in a fine leather package. This is a beautiful dark forest green journal notebook that will never need to be thrown out when you’re done. It’s refillable! Take a look at the other designs.
84. Embossed Leather Dual Dragons Journal

Of course, some of the items I’ve suggested below aren’t necessarily for art supplies. But, who cares, if it works for your need? I’m particularly fond of the nail polish shelving system. They work great doubling as a paint holder that easily keeps everything visible and within easy reach. For a more efficient, productive hobby time, my pro tip is to dedicate a hobby space and keep it organized.

85. Stow-n-Spin 2 Tier Lazy Susan Turntable Rack Organizer Rotating Deep Shelves
This is a common kitchen organizer for spices and condiments. It has a fairly small footprint. The cool part about the stow-n-spin is that it rotates to give you access to the different parts of the organizer. The non-slip surface keeps things in place as you spin. This doubles well as a paint rack for different sized bottles and pots. Reasonably priced, this is an affordable option for organizing your paints.
86. 360 Degree Rotating Makeup Organizer, Adjustable Storage with Large Capacity
This is a full 360 rotating organizer. The neat part about this organizer is that it takes up so little footprint space. At the same time, it holds so much! Store paint and other media while still maintaining easy access to your supplies.
87. Acrylic Organizer Holds up to 102 Bottles, Storage Shelf
I have four of these shelves. They sit around my hobby crafting desk. They allow me to see my paint bottles and at-a-glance grab the one color I need. They are sturdy and you can hang them on a wall. It can hold a lot of paint bottles or anything in a similarly sized container.
88. iDesign Clarity Plastic Tiered Organizer for Storage of Cosmetics, Paint, and Accessories
If you’re looking for a smaller modular way to organize your art supplies and paint, this could be the way to do it. The tiered organizer will sit on your desk within easy reach. Simple and functional: what else could you ask for?
Here’s a review of one of my favorite acrylic paint organization racks.
89. Brush Cleaner With Drying Rack
I use this to clean my brushes as well as store them while they dry. It also works great when you’re oil painting miniatures because you can put your mineral spirits in this to give your soiled brushes a good soak. The spring is sized perfectly for small diameter handle brushes, and has enough length to all you to keep the bristles in cleaning solution. Inexpensive, but ever useful. This is a nice useful gift to your fellow artist, painter, or hobbyist.
90. Acrylic Pen Holder Display Stand Clear, Fountain Pen or Brush Rack (2 Pack)
I love these. I keep my brushes on these racks when not in use. They way this displays your brushes lets you reach for the one you need without digging through a drawer. Even better if you already own fancy kolinsky sables to show off your professional acumen with your art instruments.
91. Paint Brush Holder, 22 Slots Paint Brush Storage, Roll Canvas Pouch, Army Green

Hobby Safety
Many hobby activities have some risk. But, of all the potential harmful things that could happen, breathing in dust or other contaminants is probably the most dangerous. Protect yourself from doing the things you love and you’ll be able to enjoy them even longer.
RELATED: BEST SPRAY BOOTHS FOR MINIATURE PAINTING WITH AN AIRBRUSH
I wear something similar when I’m working with resin or sanding materials that kick out a lot of dust. This is a flexible mesh constructed mask that doesn’t get sticky with your sweat. The mask also uses a design that makes breathing easy so I can wear this for a long time without feeling like I’m breathing through a straw. The mask comes with replacement filters that you insert into the slots on the front. Check here for more details.
94. 3M Dual Cartridge Respirator Assembly
This is a professional respirator designed to keep out all sorts of contaminants from your lungs. This will provide up to 40 hours of light solvent filtering work. Fairly risk things like spraying aerosol primer and airbrushing will be safer when you wear this respirator. Importantly, the assembly protects from organic vapors, and recommended for spray paint applications often used in the automotive industry. I find this a very comfortable mask to wear for those longer sessions of painting, though be sure to replace the filters.
95. Uvex Skyper Blue Light Blocking Computer Glasses with SCT-Orange Lens
Did you know that the bright daylight bulbs you use for painting miniatures can lead to sleeplessness? See why blue light is bad for you. These blue blocking computer glasses might be just the things for your special someone if they have trouble sleeping. They block blue light, which has been shown to disrupt sleep. Take a closer look. Another option if you already wear prescription glasses is to use clip-on blue light blocking lenses.
96. DEX FIT Level 5 Cut Resistant Gloves
Anyone who works with model kit assembly or other similar hobby activity has experienced the shock of a blade through a finger or other body part. It’s an inevitable part of working with knives. I use these cut resistant gloves when I know I’m at risk of having a blade slip, e.g., whittling or terrain-making. These gloves have superb protection and will stop any non-powered blade. The rubberized grip is effective! Keeping a good grip even when the gloves are wet is a key feature that makes me recommend this to anyone. They are comfortable for use in warm weather for long periods of time. Make sure you check for the right size.

Lights and Other Illuminating Gifts
What kind of light setup do you need for painting miniatures and other hobby activities? Good quality, diffuse lighting can prevent eye fatigue, a major roadblock to a comfortable long hobby session. The best lamps and light setups provide proper white balanced light at the right brightness. These kinds of lights will also improve your ability to paint or work because they will accurately reveal issues of contrast and color. See more reviews of my recommended best magnifying lights and lamps for painting miniatures.
123. OttLite Desk Lamp with Swivel Base
OttLite is brand trusted for making high utility daylight lamps. Not only is the OttLite desk lamp (more details here) highly functional for my needs as a miniature hobbyist, it has lasted years. Give this unique gift and light up their life. Check out a review of my favorite portable task lamp for the miniature and modeling hobby.
124. TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp, Dimmable Office Lamp with USB Charging Port, 5 Lighting Modes with 7 Brightness Levels, Touch Control
Poor lighting reduces contrast and distorts color on a model as it is painted. These lamps mostly emit light that is too warm in color and dim. I have one of these lamps for reading or working on regular office tasks at home, but I don’t use it for painting miniatures. The TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp is perfect as a light source for artists, painters, and hobbyists who need good quality, bright light to work. Read more details here. This lamp also includes USB ports for charging your smartphone and powering other accessories you may want around the workbench.
125. PHIVE LED Desk Lamp, Architect Clamp Task Table Lamp, 20W Super Bright Extra Wide Area Drafting Work Light, 4 Color Modes, 5 Brightness Levels – Great for Workbench, Office, Art Studio, Reading, and Painting
Great quality swing arm lamp that emits a powerful, yet diffuse light that has lasted me more than 5 years without changing the bulb. See the review and other lights for painting miniatures. The LED’s are white-balanced for proper color reproduction on miniatures. LEDs also do not produce much heat, so you won’t burn up during those long painting sessions. What more could you ask for. Check out the other features of this lamp.

The LEDs are efficient, long-lasting, and durable. For more details, check here.
Optical Magnification for Hobbyists and Artists
To paint details on miniatures, you need good fine-motor skill and eagle eye sight. Magnification aids in particular, e.g., visors, headsets, or reading glasses, can improve detailed painting. See the full review for my thoughts on the top 3 best magnifier visors. Headband visors are a unique gift idea for anyone who is looking to work with miniatures and objects with fine details. I use a visor when I’m painting faces, eyes, or free handing. Magnifying lamps are an option, too, for those of you who don’t want to wear your lenses.
127. Donegan OptiVISOR LX Binocular Magnifier-Lensplate, #4 Lens Magnifies 2X At 10″ Focal Length
The advantages of the Optivisor Headband is the ability to switch out the glass lens inserts for different magnification power (1.5 to 3.75x). This makes the visor incredibly versatile and can adapt to your personal needs and tastes for painting miniatures. This magnifier is also incredibly comfortable for long painting and hobby work sessions.
128. LED Head Magnifier, Rechargeable Hands Free Headband Magnifying Glass with 2 Led Professional Jeweler’s Loupe Light
This is a slightly cheaper option than the Optivisor shown above. This visor comes with lenses of different optical power. But, in contrast to the Optivisor that uses glass lenses, this visor uses plastic lenses.
129. Brightech LightView PRO – LED Magnifying Glass Desk Lamp for Close Work – Adjustable & Dimmable – 2.25x Magnification
This is a welcome unique gift for any hobbyist who needs more light and visual power. The 2.25x magnification lens (5″ inch diameter) on this Brightech LightView Desk Lamp is well-suited to painting miniatures. The swing-arm clamps to the side of any desk. For long painting sessions or hobby work, e.g., soldering, model-making, this is probably the most cost-effective magnifying lamp you can get. Check out the other awesome lamp options I recommend here.
130. LED Magnifying Lamp with Clamp, Addie 1,200 Lumens Dimmable Super Bright Full Spectrum Daylight 5-Diopter Magnifier Glass
The Addie LED Magnifying Lamp is the direct competitor with the Brightech LightView Pro LED. Nearly the same in price and functionality, there are several notable differences. The Addie Lamp is brighter than the Brightech at 1200 lumens (compared with 800 lumens of the Brightech). Although the Addie Lamp has a glass lens that is only 4″ in diameter compared with the Brightech, the Addie has slightly more magnification power at 2.5x. See more details here.
